How to Prepare Your Home for a Remodeling Project
A well-prepared home makes for faster, cleaner and less stressful work. Most of it takes an afternoon.

Clear the working path
Empty the work area completely, and clear the route from the door to it. Anything fragile between the two should be moved before day one, not on day one.
Agree the boundaries in advance
Which door the crew uses, where materials stage, where the dust barriers go, which bathroom is available, and what time work starts. Settling this before the first morning avoids every awkward conversation later.
Plan for the missing room
If the kitchen is out for several weeks, set up a temporary one somewhere sensible with the refrigerator, kettle, microwave and sink access. It is a small thing that makes the whole project easier to tolerate.
